What are SOT-Cranial Technique and CranioSacral Therapies?

CranioSacral

Both SOT-Cranial Technique and CranioSacral Therapy are gentle, massage-like treatments that may provide relief from a variety of symptoms including headaches, chronic pain and balance problems, among many others. Although very similar SOT-Cranial Technique is more of a chiropractic-oriented approach for resolving these issues but there are no rapid adjustments to the spine. The movements are slow and gentle.

What conditions may SOT-Cranial Technique help?
Chronic Neck and Back Pain
Stress, anxiety, and tension-related disorders
Motor-coordination impairments
Traumatic injury to the neck, head, and back
Headaches
Complex regional pain syndrome
Fascial adhesions
Clenching and Temporo-Mandibular Joint disorders

SOT-Cranial Technique uses a light touch approach to balance and relax the tension patterns affecting the neck, head, and back. Relieving tension in the central nervous system promotes a feeling of well-being by eliminating pain and boosting health and immunity.

The focus of SOT-Cranial Technique is a gentle placement of hands to assist release of the body’s connective tissue, or “fascia.” Fascia (Latin word for “band”) is the connective tissue which supports all the nerves, muscles, brain, spinal cord and organs. Because of their interconnection relaxing one region of the body benefits the other areas as well.

SOT-Cranial Technique is thought to improve efficiency of biological processes by boosting self-correction and self-healing. The therapy can be used successfully with children and adults.

What can I expect from a SOT-Cranial Technique session?
A SOT-Cranial Technique session is similar to massage therapy, except you stay fully clothed.

The treatment session begins with a consultation with Dr. Monk to identify troubled areas. Soft music and low lighting are often used to increase your state of relaxation.

The therapist uses gentle pressure to assess the presence of possible restrictions in your fascial system. Light touch and fascial release may help your muscles and organs naturally release tension, improving function. Patients often report feeling a sense of deep relaxation.

Is SOT-Cranial Technique right for everyone?
SOT-Cranial Technique can benefit almost everyone. Occasionally, however, it may not be the most effective approach and you’ll need to discuss this with Dr. Monk before receiving treatment.

Is SOT-Cranial Technique covered by insurance?
SOT-Cranial Technique is not covered by insurance. An out-of-pocket payment is required prior to treatment.

Spinal Stenosis

Six Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis:

1. Pain in the Spine
Spinal Stenosis is felt in the lower back but especially down the side of the leg, hip, and calf. This is called ‘referred pain’ and happens because the nerves travel all the way down to the feet. You might also feel intense cramping in your ankles, numbness in your feet, and tingling.

2. Muscle Weakness
Your muscles are only as strong as the signals they receive from your brain. When the nerves are compressed you won’t be able to lift as much or walk as far as before.

3. Poor Coordination
You might find that your coordination is “off.” Things like driving, lifting heavy weights, or using dangerous tools is not advisable when you notice a loss of coordination.

4. Difficulty Walking
You might find it’s a struggle to put one foot in front of the other without falling. You may also have a tendency to “run out of gas” in the middle of a walk.

5. Cramping in the Legs
It can feel like a bear trap clamped onto your ankle. The cramping may be worse after standing for extended periods and relieved by sitting or lying down.

6. Hip pain
One hallmark of Spinal Stenosis is pain that travels down as well as up the leg. An especially maddening pain can be felt in the hip. When this happens you will be tempted to go to your doctor and demand an X-ray of your hip, only to be frustrated when it comes back perfectly normal.

7. Irritability
You probably won’t be able to sleep more than 4 straight hours at night so you’ll be grouchy and frustrated during the day.

Spinal Stenosis may not be cured,
but it CAN be MANAGED.
